Blackboard 9.1, SP 8 - Customization: How do I allow or not allow users with the role of Observer to access my course or organization?

Customization: Guest and Observer Access

Observers are defined as users in a Course who do not directly participate in its activities but who follow the actions of one or more Students enrolled in the Course. Also, the Instructor can communicate Early Warning System notifications to Observers as well as the Student, or just to the Observers of the Student. The System Administrator can allow or disallow Observers access to Courses by default.

Video Tutorial: Permitting and Restricting Guest and Observer Access

Step 1: In the Control Panel, select Customization, then select Guest and Observer Access.

Note: If this option is not hyperlinked, then your campus has not made this feature available to you.

TIP: Allowing Guests and Observers access to the Course does not grant them access all the features in the Course. It is possible to permit Guest and Observer Access to individual features through the Tool Availability link under Customization on the Control Panel. However, system settings override Course settings when restricting access. If the system does not permit Guest Access to a tool, Guests enrolled in the Course cannot be permitted access to the tool at the Course level.

Step 2: Select either Yes or No to make the course available or unavailable for Observers to view.

When set to Yes, Observers can access content in the course. Observers cannot access Assessments or Assignments.

Step 3: Click Submit.
